What an actress is the wife of Tim Burton. Helena Bonham Carter: “I knew that Tim was already sick of me. Free swimming and your own style

Thirteen-year union of American director Tim Burton and English actress Helena Bonham Carter ended with a "friendly parting". "They remain friends and will jointly fulfill their parental responsibilities towards their two children" - this statement made by the actress's press agent on the very eve of Christmas, pretty dumbfounded the Hollywood crowd, and what happened has already been called a Christmas nightmare.

Fans of the most eccentric couple in the world of American show business grieve not only about the collapse of another family, but also that they, apparently, will forever have to forget about the brilliant creative union of Tim and Helena. Burton filmed his common-law wife in seven films, and it was no coincidence that she was called his muse. But it looks like the relationship in their strange family kingdom has cracked for a long time. Last time Helena starred in Burton's Dark Shadows in 2012. At the same time, the actress, with her peculiar humor peculiar to her, doubted their further cooperation: “Tim seems to be sick of me on the set”. And the director himself admitted that he no longer wants to shoot Helena, that he needs “ new blood". For inspiration. But unexpectedly, the studio bosses intervened in the seemingly family history. They told Tim to keep filming his wife and not fool them. Business is business - in fact, thanks in large part to the participation of Bonham Carter, Burton's previous projects made so much money! The director's pride was severely damaged, and this did not improve the climate in the family.

And now, in October 2013, photographers spot Burton with some unknown blonde. This photo spread across all the tabloids. True, Helena immediately rushed to Tim's defense. Her representative published a statement from the actress, where she categorically denies the fact of her husband's betrayal. Like, they were at that party together, and goodbye Tim gave a friendly kiss and hugged one of the ladies present there. But, as you know, there is no smoke without fire. For the next year, the couple did not appear anywhere together. Only recently did friends find Helena and Tim at an evening at the house of the current British Prime Minister, where they are traditionally invited by his wife, Samantha Cameron. Even such a beautiful actress found it difficult to hide her bad mood and sadness ... Why did Helena endure for so long and only on Christmas Eve decided to voice the gap? In all likelihood, the reason is as old as the world: the actress hoped to the last that Tim would come to his senses and with her help - without scenes and shouts - would be able to overcome the crisis of men of a certain age, namely those who are over fifty. But, alas, hopes were not justified. It is a pity, because Helena Bonham Carter's path to happiness in family life did not at all resemble a carpet strewn with rose petals ...

Until the age of 30, Helena did not even think about her personal life. Moreover, she was born into an aristocratic family of a wealthy London banker. Her family tree contains more than one English peer (and above this title, only persons royal family) and the Spanish baron (on the mother's side). Her great-grandfather, Herbert Henry Asquith, was once the Prime Minister of Great Britain. And Lady Violet's father's cousin Bonham Carter was known as Churchill's close friend. It so happened that the mother of the future actress fell out of reality for some time, to put it simply, she had a clouding of her mind. But she managed to recover, and this miracle prompted her to become a very successful psychotherapist. True, in the process of mastering the wisdom of such a delicate profession, Elena often used her daughter as a guinea pig. When Helena was 13 years old, her beloved father became paralyzed after an unsuccessful operation, and the girl, together with her brothers and sisters, helped her mother cope with the misfortune. There was no need to look after him - a solid bank account allowed him to hire a dozen nurses. But this brilliant erudite and cheerful person who found himself in a wheelchair needed moral support and communication very much. At the school where Carter studied, her friends were completely carried away by the theater. And Helena, for whom the lessons of maternal psychoanalysis were not in vain, realized that the theater would help her to cope with the oppressive atmosphere of misfortune that settled in their house. "Substitution" is how it is called in the language of professionals. Mother had nothing to say. The father was very upset, because he dreamed that his daughter would go to Cambridge without any problems. Instead, Helena began to get roles in the movies. And at the age of 18 she first played one of her many queens in the film Lady Jane. The replacement was a success - the young actress played many historical, "corset" roles, playing the roles of the heroines of the Edwardian and Victorian eras. She once said: "Now all I have to do is remove myself a couple of ribs to make the corset fit even better." But Hollywood came to the rescue in the person of Brad Pitt. He personally persuaded her to star in David Fincher's "Fight Club" - and Helena did an excellent job, playing a drug addict and ripping off Marla. Audiences were struck by the explicit love scenes with Pitt, and the film became a cult hit.

The inimitable Helena Bonham Carter began as the "queen of corsets", brilliantly playing the roles of the heroines of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Helena later became famous as the muse of Tim Burton. The characters played by the actress during this period are peculiar and quirky. In total, Bonham Carter starred in seven films of her talented husband, not counting the voice acting for Corpse Bride.

The unofficial marriage of Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton lasted for 13 years. It's hard to imagine a more suitable pair. But all good things come to an end. And in 2014, the actress and director announced their separation - to the great sadness of fans of everything creative and unusual.

Helena Bonham Carter played the main villain, the Red Queen. In Burton's version, this character got the name - Iratsibeta. I must say that the heroine appears even more unpleasant than in the fairy tale by Lewis Carroll. This is a jealous, quarrelsome and cruel person who, without the slightest remorse of conscience, is capable of not only executing a servant who has fallen for sheer nonsense, but also unleashing a bloody war.

Helena Bonham Carter played the eccentric Rose Vile, a bankrupt designer. Moreover, it was not difficult for the actress to portray such an extravagant character. The fact is that Helena dresses very strangely in real life. The actress even jokingly calls herself the Antichrist of fashion.

Tim, 56, and Helena, 48, have lived in separate neighborhoods throughout their 13-year relationship. They were considered one of the strongest couples in Hollywood, and both of their mansions were connected by one large corridor. Not so long ago, they bought another one for their two children and a nanny.

For the first time director Tim Burton met with Helena Bonham Carter in 2001 on the set of his film "Planet of the Apes". The rebellious aristocrat from London was the living embodiment of a princess from a sullen Gothic fairy tale, created as if specially for director Burton.

Chose an aristocrat

Their relationship began immediately. True, ex-wife Burton Lisa, to whom he was married for 10 years, tried with all her might to prevent the couple from living happily ever after. Lisa filed a lawsuit against her ex-husband Burton and demanded to pay her $ 5.4 million, a kind of alimony after living together.

Burton's new wife grew up in a family of hereditary aristocrats; Helena's great-grandfather, Lord Asquith, was Prime Minister of Great Britain, and her grandmother was a Baroness. Helena was prepared for high society: she studied at Westminster School in London, spoke fluent French.

Since childhood, Helena dreamed of becoming an actress. At the age of 11, she won a money prize in a poetry competition and spent it on creating a portfolio for an acting career; at school, Helena played the role of Juliet in a radio show, starred in commercials. After studying at the Department of Drama Theater at Cambridge University, the young actress began to receive the roles of aristocrats, her facial features and manners were in perfect harmony with the interiors of the last century. True, very soon Helena got tired of the same type of roles of young ladies in crinoline, but her famous role in "Fight Club" was still far away.

Almost family

“I tolerate women only in those cases when I love them very much and when I am interested in solving their fantasies,” Burton said in one of his interviews. "And that doesn't happen often."

Becoming the lover, muse and favorite actress of "the strangest director", Helena suddenly realized that she had settled down. Somewhere her craving for new adventures on the side disappeared, she wanted to have a family and children. And Tim began to look happier and more contented, according to the observation of journalists and colleagues.

“Helena is the most talented visionary in relation to real life... In terms of life and family, she is a terribly careless, chaotic wife. I go shopping with the kids in the supermarket. I know what their shoe size is, what is needed in kindergarten and what fruits they are allergic to. I even in kindergarten presented a pot with a flower - for exemplary parenting and care. In my opinion, it's a rose, ”Burton frankly told reporters about his everyday problems. We can say that the family of such an eccentric couple did not quite work out. They did not officially register their relationship. At the same time, Tim lives in America, and Helena chooses life in two countries, alternately flying from Los Angeles to London.

Billy and Nell

The godfather of the first child of Helena and Tim was Johnny Depp - not only one of Burton's favorite actors, but also his old and loyal friend. To match the talented godfather and mother, little Billy Ray was preparing for an acting career from early childhood. For the first time on the screen, he appeared at the age of one and a half years in his father's picture "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Four years later, Helena and Tim had a baby girl whose name was not disclosed by her parents for eight months. Later in an interview, Helena admitted that her daughter was named Nell. It was then that Helena and Tim decided that life in two countries - America and England - was over for them. They sold their Los Angeles homes and finally moved to London.

By mutual desire

On December 23, the news appeared in People magazine that the star couple had decided to break up. According to the newspaper, "the couple broke up by mutual desire a few months ago, while Burton and Carter remained friends and agreed to joint custody of the children."

According to rumors, the reason for the breakup was "Tim's midlife crisis." As it became known to the British tabloids, Burton was noticed last year flirting with an unknown blonde, but then the couple refused to comment on the provocative pictures of the paparazzi.

It seems that his work was greatly influenced by childhood fears, impressions and images that were born in the fantasies of a little native of Burbank.

Tim Burton biography

Childhood impressions

The world of the shop, which was owned by the mother of the future director Jean Burton, seemed amazing to the boy. The shop sold trinkets in the shape of cats and with images of these mustachioed striped. The Burtons' house was not far from the cemetery - was it where he spied on the scenes for his macabre tapes? But the fact that the fantasy "Edward - Scissorhands" displays Burbank (as Tim once imagined him), that's for sure.

Even Tim's nursery was strange: instead of windows, there were only narrow openings, like loopholes in a watchtower. This made the boy feel very uncomfortable at home. Difficult relationships with parents will be reflected in the movie tale "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (the stern father-dentist instilled fear in the baby Willie Wonke).

The teenager experienced a particular thrill in the stuffy darkness of cinemas - he adored horror films and science fiction. He himself tried to shoot - so far only cartoons in which the main characters were portrayed by miniature dolls.

"Under the wing" of the Disney studio

In 1976, Tim becomes a student. At the California Institute of the Arts, learning the basics of mastery, Burton surprises teachers by providing them with ready-made short films instead of writing.

It would be a huge success for any newbie to practice in the legendary Disney studio - this is where Tim got a job in 1979. A designer and then an animator, he wanted more independence and later called the work in the studio similar to serving in the army. However, Burton had a hand in several Disney projects. These are the cartoon "The Lord of the Rings", "The Fox and the Dog", "The Black Cauldron", "Tron". At the same time, he works for himself, shoots a funny avant-garde short film Luau - Hawaiian Party, cartoons "Vincent" and "Frankenweenie".

The world of full-length cinema opened for Burton with the invitation of the actor Paul Rubens. He invited Tim to shoot the comedy "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure." The music for the film was written by Danny Elfman, with whom Burton still continues to collaborate.

Free swimming and your own style

In 1987, the director began filming Beetlejuice, and this successful comedy noir was followed by Batman and its sequel. Huge audience interest and, as a result, good box office receipts allowed the director to continue to work in his own way, not following the lead of the producers.

He himself writes scripts for many of his films, but the film based on Burton's poem "The Nightmare Before Christmas" was directed by another director, Henry Selick (the author himself was very busy at that time). But the atmosphere in this cartoon is somewhat reminiscent of the later Corpse Bride, so it is often believed that it was Burton who directed The Nightmare.

Johnny Depp worked with Burton for the first time in Edward - Scissorhands, since then the actor has been involved in almost all of the director's projects.

Tim Burton's personal life

Seductive lisa

Burton's first serious hobby was his fellow Frankenweenie and other early projects, Julie Hickson.

And in 1989, the director registered his only official marriage. His wife was a native of Berlin, photographer Lena Geiske. Together they were not for long, although the divorce was filed only in 1993.

Further in the life of the genius came the period of the model and artist Lisa Mary Smith. They met at a New Year's party on the eve of 1992 and very soon began to live together. Burton filmed his beloved in the biopic-drama "Ed Wood", she appeared in the comedy "Mars Attacks" (Lisa is the same big-headed alien, sexy girl who sneaked into the White House).

They got engaged and were a couple until 2001 - until one muse was replaced by another. Several projects of that period are considered genius - for example, "Sleepy Hollow", and some remained unrealized (so, it was not possible to shoot a sequel to "Beetlejuice" and film "Wii" with Lisa Mary as Pannochka).

Charming aristocrat

In the remake of "Planet of the Apes", which was directed by Burton, the British (by birth - a real aristocrat) Helena Bonham Carter played. It was she who put a fat point in the relationship between Tim and Lisa. The director confesses to his passion for treason and already in October 2001 becomes engaged to Helena.

The ex-bride falls into a long depression - she did not expect such treachery from her lover. With a big scandal, Smith sued Burton for $ 5.4 million (he paid this money for several years), but still remained dissatisfied with the results of the process: after all, he, according to Lisa Mary, promised to provide her financially until his death.

The final move to London, the birth of their first child - Billy will give impetus to the filming of the amazing drama "Big Fish". It differs from other works of the master. But then he returned to his infernal experiments - in particular, in the Oscar nominee, the animated film Corpse Bride.

His common-law wife, like Depp, the director with enviable persistence provides work. And Helena, 4 years after the birth of a son very similar to her dad, gave him a daughter, Nell, but, alas, at the end of 2014, the media learned that one of the strongest couples in Hollywood broke up.

There are hardly two halves in Hollywood that fit together better than Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter. The union of two bright and eccentric individuals has become extremely strong and happy.

Unrecognized genius

Tim Burton was born in sunny California, a small quiet town of Burbank near Los Angeles. It is difficult to think of a more inappropriate place for the future king of gothic fantasy. With all his might, he tried not to notice the bright colors of the world around him: from joint games with classmates, he went for a walk alone in the cemetery or sat in the twilight of a cinema, greedily absorbing the events of another fantastic film about monsters.

That was the whole Tim - a depression was familiar and even necessary for him. At school drawing classes, he sincerely did not understand why draw an ordinary ripe apple when you can depict a spoiled fruit with a grinning worm, and this still life would look much more entertaining.

Peers were frightened by the strange inclinations of young Tim, a thin, disheveled teenager was not popular among girls. The only one who appreciated Burton's dark but original drawings was one of his school teachers.

Thanks to his support, the young man won a grant to enter the California Institute of the Arts, founded by Walt Disney. It was inconceivable for Tim to pay for the classes in this institution himself, although from the age of 14 he learned to support himself - he left home and settled in a cramped room in his grandmother's house, pledging to honestly pay the old woman the rent.

After graduation, Burton, whom the other students considered clearly out of this world, made them boil with envy. This eccentric has fulfilled the bright dream of all ambitious graduates - to get into the animation team of the Disney studio. Of course, even the studio did not at first see through the depth of Tim's depressive and gloomy mood. He was an incredibly talented artist, but he was directing his skills in the wrong direction, which was needed by the bosses of the company.

Instead of beautiful animals with naive, wide-eyed eyes, he painted crippled monsters with a sad look. The studio sounded the alarm and removed Tim from his main job, however, after Burton's persistent attempts to create his own unique paintings, a couple of years later, they entrusted him to make a film about the cheerful life-star Pee-wee. An unusual choice of director for such a perky movie, however, the film was a resounding success. Showered with proposals to shoot blockbusters, the first swallow, or rather, the bat, was "Batman".

Fairy princess

Tim's popularity did not bring satisfaction. On the contrary, his sadness became incomparably deeper, and thoughts of suicide came to visit him more and more often. The audience was delighted with his creations, but critics, without letting go, insisted that the world had never seen a worse director. It was then that he met the artist Lena Gieseke, close to him in spirit. The girl moved to his house and began to take care of him in a way that no one else did before. Tim decided that this was fate, and invited her to get married. However, soon the presence of his wife began to tire the director, family life turned out to be inexpressibly boring for Burton. He divorced Lena and set off to learn all the delights of a bachelor life, for the first time feeling himself attractive to women. The eccentric unrecognized genius turned out to be an excellent bait for the jaded social divas.

The meeting with a young, unknown model Lisa Mary grew into a 10-year-long romance. Both were sure that their relationship would sooner or later lead to marriage, they even got engaged. Life with Lisa was convenient and comfortable for Tim, he didn't need anything else. Of course, in his imagination he drew for himself the image of his ideal woman and muse, but he did not even think that there was a girl in the world who would fit into him.

With Lisa Mary, 1997

When he met her on the set of Planet of the Apes, he could hardly believe his eyes. The rebellious aristocrat Helena Bonham Carter was the living embodiment of a princess from a sullen gothic tale, created as if specially for him, Tim. In addition, as it should be in fairy tales, a serious obstacle appeared on the path of the lovers - Lisa did her best to prevent Tim and Helena from living "happily ever after." She filed a lawsuit against her civil husband demanding to pay her $ 5.4 million, a kind of alimony after living together.

Helena was not at all like Lisa. She didn’t look like anyone at all. A beautiful rebel with a shock of unruly hair grew up in a family of hereditary aristocrats, her great-grandfather, Lord Asquith, was the Prime Minister of Great Britain, and her grandmother was a Baroness. Helena was prepared for high society: she studied at Westminster School in London, she spoke fluent French, her father, a banker, had connections in politics and show business, but she decided to "trample" her way into an adult on her own.

Helena was already tired of the same type of roles of young ladies in crinoline, but her famous role as an informal girl in Fight Club was still far away. It is at this time that she meets actor and director Kenneth Bran. He was engaged in the selection of an actress for the film adaptation of "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley. Bonham Carter, who showed up at the audition in a short silk skirt, woolen stockings and a hat with a giant feather, impressed him not only with the exact fit. After meeting at the casting, the actors began dating.

Helena Bonham Carter and Kenneth Branagh in Flight Theory, 1998

Almost family life

The relationship with Brana became the longest in Helena's life. She has never been consistent, but all attempts to leave Kenneth ended in a scandal on his part. The final break came after Helena's meeting with Tim. Kenneth had to let her go because it was hard not to admit that Burton was the perfect match for her.

Becoming the lover, muse and favorite actress of the "worst director", Helena suddenly realized that she had settled down. Somewhere her craving for new adventures on the side disappeared, she wanted to have a family and children. And Tim began to look happier and more contented. True, the family of such an eccentric couple turned out to be no less unusual. They did not officially register their relationship and settle in the same house.

Tim bought a mansion near Helena's house, after the birth of his first child, the wall between the houses was destroyed. As the actress herself says in an interview, “to the right is my half - the kingdom of boudoir in the style of Provence, to the left - half of Tim - the land of horrors”. Living side by side, they decided to keep each other's bright personality. Helena does not touch Burton's cute and touching monsters and devils, and he does not bring confusion into the aristocratic interiors of her house.
