Miracles associated with the icon of the Matrona of Moscow

Until 1999, while Matrona of Moscow had not yet been canonized, believers came to her grave at the Danilovskoye cemetery. They prayed, asked for help and consolation in their sorrows, and were certainly heard. After 1999, Mother was canonized as a Saint, and a string of pilgrims reached out to her image and relics at the Intercession Women’s Monastery in Moscow. There is much evidence of the miraculous help of Blessed Matrona: she helped people in illness, guided them on the right path, and saved them from adversity and spiritual sorrow.

Mishakov Evgeniy from Nizhnevartovsk testifies to how Blessed Matrona helped him to heal from hand disease and overcome mental turmoil. For a long time, Eugene’s life did not work out - he was haunted by troubles, and soon he suffered from a physical illness: the joints of his hands began to ache, so much so that he could not even hold a tea cup. One day he had a dream so vivid and distinct that the young man thought he was seeing everything in reality. 3 women in monastic robes approached him and called him to follow them into the hut. Unable to resist, Eugene followed them. It was dark in the hut, only the weak light of the lamp illuminated the red corner with numerous icons. Suddenly one of the women approached the young man and hugged him. Evgeny felt lightness and warmth, unknown to him before. And then he woke up. His hands were absolutely healthy, and life soon began to improve. Later, the young man learned that his mother had repeatedly traveled to the relics and icon of the Matrona of Moscow, asking for protection and help for her son.

Elena from Omsk says that for a long time she had been planning to go to Moscow to venerate the relics and icon of St. Matrona. But the journey is long and expensive, and the girl kept postponing the trip. Suddenly, circumstances developed in such a way that Elena literally had to go to the capital within 3 days. In Moscow, she first visited the Intercession Convent, and experienced the first grace only from her presence next to the icon of Mother Matrona. Later, the Blessed One herself appeared to her in a dream and called Elena by name, and the girl felt that Matrona was watching over everyone who addressed her. Just 3 months later, Elena’s life changed, filled with wonderful events. But most importantly, the girl finally found her true love, a worthy and decent man.

The Moiseenkov military family from Yekaterinburg testifies to the miraculous help of the Matrona of Moscow, received after prayer in front of her image in one of the churches in Yekaterinburg. For a long time, a family with three children stood in line to get an apartment. And year after year, officials refused housing to the Moiseenkovs. One day they all prayed together to the Blessed Elder, asking for her help in resolving the housing issue. On the same day, the long-awaited call came - the city allocated an apartment for the Moiseenkovs. We miraculously managed to collect the required 15 certificates in just 2 days, and within a week the family moved into a new home!

Deacon Valery Bakhterov talks about how Mother Matrona helped him. He was appointed director of an Orthodox gymnasium, but local authorities resolutely refused Valery premises for conducting lessons. Dozens of young Christians were deprived of the opportunity to learn the word and law of God. Then Bakhterov, having gathered his students, went to the grave of Matrona of Moscow at the Danilovsky cemetery and served a prayer service there. When he returned home, he found out that the district administration had allocated him as many as 3 premises for an Orthodox gymnasium! Later, when the documents and keys were received, the deacon saw that a positive decision was made precisely on the day when he and his students made a pilgrimage to the grave of Matrona.

It is impossible to list all the miracles emanating from the icon and relics of the Matrona of Moscow. There is evidence of how hopeless patients were healed, how girls abandoned by doctors found the happiness of motherhood, how lost children returned to the bosom of the family hearth, and how people who turned to Mother Matrona for support were able to overcome their addictions and bad habits . Every day believers come to bow to the Blessed Old Lady and, as in life, she responds to everyone who is pure in heart and whose prayer is truly sincere and ardent.

Life of Matrona of Moscow

The Lord, choosing from among His slaves those who will faithfully carry out His will, endows them with amazing abilities, but in return deprives them of the fleeting joys of ordinary human existence. Often lay people see happiness in health and prosperity, family and children... Even the thought that they could lose all this is incredible, bitter and difficult for them. But there are other people who are deprived of the understanding of the ordinary person. They do not know material luxury or the warmth of family, they suffer from the hardships of physical ailments and are often forced to wander in search of fleeting shelter. But at the same time, they carry within themselves a divine gift - boundless philanthropy and mercy, strong faith capable of working miracles, and absolute love for all humanity and our Lord. And this great gift makes them truly happy, because it brings them closer to God. This is exactly what the Blessed Elder Matrona of Moscow was.

Biography of Matrona

In 1885, one kind woman, expecting a child, had a wonderful dream: an unborn baby appeared to her in the form of a white bird with a human face. The eyes of that bird were tightly closed, and its face was sad. The woman regarded this dream as a miraculous sign, and she was right - a few months later a little blind girl was born, who, a little over 100 years later, became one of the most revered saints in Russian Orthodoxy.

Matrona's parents - Dmitry and Natalya Nikonov - lived in the village of Sebino, Tula region, near the Kulikovo field. They earned their living by honest work, went to church, and were kind and merciful to others. Their economic situation was very precarious, so the news of their wife’s pregnancy (and by that time there were already three children in the family) did not bring joy to anyone. After much deliberation, Dmitry and Natalya decided to send their newborn child to a shelter. But when a pregnant woman had a prophetic dream about a white bird, her dark thoughts left her. The couple accepted the newborn as a gift from God and left the blind baby in the family.

The fact that God assigned a special role to Matrona was realized even at the girl’s baptism. When the child was lowered into the font, everyone present saw how the air around Matrona was filled with light, fragrant smoke. Father Vasily, who performed the sacrament of baptism, said: “I have seen a lot and baptized many. But this was the first time that this had happened to my eyes. This baby is holy! The priest also added that one day Matrona would predict his death. And indeed, many years later, suddenly at night she suddenly said: “Father Vasily has died.” Matronushka's parents went to the priest's house and found out that he had really just set off on his last journey.

Matrona also had a physical “seal” of God’s chosenness - from birth on the girl’s body, on her chest, there was a special mark in the shape of a cross, like a bulge on the skin. Later, when Natalya scolded her daughter for taking off her cross, Matronushka answered: “Why do I need him as a mother, I have my own cross on my body, it’s always with me.”

Natalya and Dmitry said that even in infancy, when night came to the house and everyone went to bed, Matrona managed to sneak into the red corner in the darkness, in an incredible way she took out icons and could play with them all night long. Later, Matrona spent all her free time, while her peers were walking and frolicking, in church. I stood behind the front door against the wall and listened to the service with rapture. If the parents lost sight of her, the first thing they did was go to church, where they usually found their daughter.

Closer to 8 years old, the blind girl began to predict the future and heal people. She not only talked about upcoming events, but also read thoughts and could tell if someone was suddenly up to no good. She knew the upcoming dangers, she felt the sorrows of people, and could heal the sick, including those who were bedridden. Very quickly, the news of Matronina’s miraculous power spread throughout the Tula region. Many people began to come to the Nikonovs’ house - the girl refused to help anyone. Those who were healed wanted to thank Matronushka and brought money and food. Soon, instead of having an “extra mouth,” she became the main breadwinner for the whole family.

At the age of 17, Matrona suddenly lost her legs, and from then until the end of her life (for another 50 years) she could not walk. The girl herself explained the reason for her illness: she knew in advance that after communion an unfamiliar woman would approach her, whose dark thoughts would forever take away Matrona’s ability to walk: “I foresaw this and did not resist. All the will of God!".

In 1925, the Matron brothers, members of the CPSU, began to move up the career ladder. The fact that a blessed girl lived in their house, who believed in Orthodoxy with all her heart and carried the word of God to the masses, did not contribute to the successful career of the communist brothers and even threatened them with reprisals. Partly for this reason, and also in order not to upset her parents, Matrona went to live in Moscow. She sincerely loved this city, revering it as a shrine and the heart of all Russia.

It was in 1925 that a new period began in the life of Mother Matrona - she became a homeless wanderer, and lived like that until the end of her days, without registration and constantly changing shelters. Her friend and comrade-in-arms, Zinaida Viktorovna Zhdanova, spoke about the terrible conditions in which the Blessed One had to live: “I came to Sokolniki, where mother often lived in a small plywood house, given to her for a while. It was deep autumn. I entered the house, and in the house there was thick, damp and dank steam, an iron stove-stove was burning. I went up to my mother, and she was lying on the bed facing the wall, she couldn’t turn to me, her hair was frozen to the wall and could barely be pulled off. I said in horror: “Mother, how can this happen? After all, you know that we live together with my mother, my brother is at the front, my father is in prison and what happened to him is unknown, but we have two rooms in a warm house, forty-eight square meters, a separate entrance; why didn’t you ask to come to us?” Mother sighed heavily and said: “God did not order so that you would not regret it later.”

Year after year, Matronushka’s life flowed rather monotonously. During the day she received visitors, sometimes their number exceeded 40 people, and at night mother prayed. Contemporaries claim that she slept very little, not really - she would lie down a little on her side, lean on her fist and doze. One girl, wanting to comprehend the spirit of the blind old woman, secretly watched Matrona all night - mother prayed and bowed to the holy images and did not lie down even for a minute.

Matrona always asked those who come to her not to seek help from sorcerers and healers, for they did not come into this world from God, but from the evil one. She surrounded herself with icons, often went to church, and healed people with prayer and holy water. Mother admonished married couples not to live in sin, but to be sure to perform the wedding ceremony. During communist demonstrations, she closed the windows tightly, as she believed that the spirit of Satan himself was rushing through the streets.

All her life Matrona helped people, never refusing anyone, taking upon herself all the sorrows and sorrows. She left without her attention only those who came to her with crafty thoughts. One day a sedate old man knocked on her door and, falling to his knees, began to pray to his mother to save his son, who was near death. Then Matrona leaned towards him and quietly asked: “What did you do to him, for life or death?” The old man turned white in fear and whispered: “To death, mother, to death.” Then the Blessed Elder became angry: “Get out of here, there is no need for you to come to me!” And after the old man left, she said: “Even sorcerers know God! If only everyone would pray the way they pray when they ask Him for forgiveness for the evil they have committed with their own hands!”

Mother Matrona set out on her last journey on May 2, 1952. She predicted her death three days in advance, managed to confess and receive communion, and left instructions that no artificial flowers or wreaths be brought to her burial. Shortly before her death, the Blessed One said: “I will die, and a rare person will come to my grave. Only friends and relatives. And when they are gone, then my last refuge will remain desolate for a long time. But years will pass, many years, and people will hear about me. And again the line of those suffering will stretch out, and I will accept everyone with their sorrows and sorrows, and I will help everyone.”

Miracles that Matrona performed during her earthly life

Matrona’s gift of providence was revealed in early childhood. In one of her first predictions, she spoke of revolution. A little girl, not versed in politics, described her visions: “They will rob, desecrate churches, drive people like cattle, take away the land... and then no one will need the land.”

Evgenia Ivanovna Kalachkova, Matrona’s neighbor, said that shortly before the revolution, a wealthy lady came to their village. That lady bought an estate and came to Matrona to tell her that she was going to build a bell tower. But the blind girl only sighed sadly: “None of this will happen, there will be no bell tower here.” The lady was very surprised: “How can this be? So I bought the materials, and soon the workers will arrive.” But Matrona was right, they never built a bell tower in Sebino.

One day Matronushka told her mother that she was going to order an icon of the Mother of God “Seeking the Lost” for the local church. A collection was announced throughout the village, everyone contributed as much coin as they could. One greedy landowner reluctantly allocated a ruble, and another, just for the sake of laughter, gave a penny. When they brought the collected money to Matrona so that she could take it to the icon painter, the girl took 1 ruble and 1 kopeck from the entire amount and said: “Give it back to them, they have a bad influence on all other money.”

Zinaida Zhdanova recalls: “Even though my mother was illiterate, she knew everything in the world. When the defense of my diploma project “Ministry of the Navy” at the architectural institute was approaching, my supervisor suddenly decided to “fail” me. He openly stated this. I came home in tears, and my mother began to calm me down: “Don’t be afraid of anything, you’ll protect yourself! Now we will go with you to Italy and see the architectural masterpieces of the great masters!” And suddenly she began to list streets, buildings, names... God only knows how she knew them. And suddenly he says: “Look, there’s the Pitti Palace, and next to it is another one, with arches. Do the same in your project - let the lower three floors be in large masonry, and let there be two large arches for free entry!” In the morning I ran to the institute and, right on my graduation project, made all the changes indicated by my mother. When the commission arrived, my heart sank. They looked at it for a long time, and then admitted that the project was indeed very worthy. I defended myself!”

Matrona healed many people during her life. Anna Filippovna Vybornova, who knew mother closely, talked about one of these healings. Her mother lived in the village of Ustye with her brother. One day he fell ill - his arms and legs stopped obeying him, and soon he could no longer lift a finger. We decided to take the sufferer to Matrona. But he didn’t believe in her gift, but since he was motionless, he couldn’t resist the trip. And then Anna Vybornova’s mother comes to Matronushka, and she meets her on the threshold: “Well, your brother doesn’t believe in me, but he himself has become soft, like a fence, motionless. Bring him to me." But mother didn’t know then why the guests were coming to her house! They brought the sufferer, Matrona read prayers over him for a long time, and he fell into a deep sleep. I slept all night, and in the morning I was completely healthy.

Another case of healing is described by Praskovya Sergeevna Anosova. The poor woman had a son in a psychiatric hospital, and there she met another family of sufferers, whose daughter was also in the hospital due to mental illness. Anosova advised them to visit the blind old woman Matrona, and the desperate parents took their daughter to the Blessed One. As soon as the girl crossed the threshold of Matrona’s house, her arms and legs became like sticks, she began to bark, convulse, cough and spit blood. Mother read prayers over her, and suddenly the girl fell asleep. The patient slept for three days in a row, without getting up to drink or eat. And when she woke up, she was completely healthy and did not remember what had happened to her earlier.

It is impossible to describe all the miracles that Matrona of Moscow performed during her lifetime; it is easier to talk about the miracles that she did not perform. She implemented every action, every word of hers only according to the will of God, often saying: “If a people loses faith in God, then disasters befall them, and if they do not repent, they perish and disappear from the face of the earth. How many peoples have disappeared, but Russia existed and will exist. Pray, ask, repent! The Lord will not leave you and will preserve our land!”

Matrona of Moscow is one of the most revered saints of the Orthodox world. During her lifetime, this saint was marked by God and received from Him the gift of miracles.
