Who is Vitaly Kaloev, based on whose story the film “Consequences” was made. Arnold, you're wrong! Film how Schwartz killed the dispatcher

13:18 — REGNUM A trailer for a new drama has appeared online Sarik Andreasyan"Unforgiven", based on real events. The film is based on the story Vitaly Kaloeva, who lost his entire family in a plane crash in 2002 over Lake Constance. The film's premiere is scheduled for September 27, 2018.

For several months, the architect from North Ossetia Vitaly Kaloev worked in Spain and waited for the arrival of his wife and two children. However, the plane was not destined to land in Barcelona. In southern Germany, a passenger plane collided with a cargo plane.

Without waiting for his family at the airport, Kaloev went to the scene of the disaster and found the bodies of his relatives there. For two years, the once laughter-filled house was replaced by a cemetery. After some time, it became clear that the tragedy occurred due to an error by air traffic controller Peter Nelsen of the Swiss company Skyguide. Kaloev decided to find the dispatcher to hear his words of apology.

The finished film script waited three years for implementation, as the director was in search of a suitable actor. Initially, the role of the main character was supposed to be played by an American actor. Adrien Brody. However, in the end, Andreasyan refused the option of using a foreign actor, since, according to the director, mentality and knowledge of the Russian language are important for playing this role.

As a result, Vitaly Kaloev played the role Dmitry Nagiev. To do this, he had to lose 8 kg. However, the filming process itself turned out to be even more difficult for the actor.

“We finished the terrible filming, about the terrible time. Someday I will tell you what we experienced during filming. But not now. Now I’m empty inside,” Nagiyev admitted on his Instagram.

The trailer of the film caused a stir among users. In just one day, the video received more than 122 thousand views and was included in the “Trends” tab on YouTube. Users' opinions regarding the film were divided.

“It is clear that Russian cinema is developing, this is very nice! I wish you success, maybe I’ll go see the film myself,” writes user Kvest Show.

“Well, the trailer is intriguing, I’ll have to go see it,” - agreed Artyom R.

Other users were confused by the duet of Nagiyev and Andreasyan. In their opinion, neither the actor nor the director is capable of creating such serious films.

"Alas. Nagiyev is not perceived in a serious role,” noted Sumbel S.

“The whole problem is that Andreasyan shot the film. Now, if this name were not on the list of creators, I would have been waiting for the film. But, alas, we will have to avoid it in cinemas,” admitted Mikhail L.

Controversy also flared up online over the originality of the plot. Many users noted that at the beginning of April 2017, the film “Consequences” was released on big screens with Arnold Schwarzenegger starring. The film is also dedicated to the story of Vitaly Kaloev. Similar plots were also found in the film “Foreigner” with Jackie Chan starring. The film tells the story of a man who lost his daughter in a terrorist attack and decided to find the killer on his own.

“The film “The Foreigner” and the film “Consequences” are stupid. Well, let's see what happens,” writes Don Krad.

“Commentators who write “they blew the idea”, “stupid remake”, etc. I have one question, are you really aligorphrenic? This film is based on real events that happened to Ossetian Vitaly Kaloev. We can just as well say that films about the Second World War and World War II are the same remakes,” Æfsæddon Master was indignant.

Let us recall that on July 1, 2002, in Germany, a Tu-154M airliner of Bashkir Airlines and a Boeing 757-200PF cargo plane of DHL airlines collided over Lake Constance. As a result of the disaster, 71 people died, including 52 children. Air traffic control at this location was carried out by a private Swiss company, Skyguide. Due to an error by controller Peter Nelsen, the planes collided almost at a right angle.

In April, the film “Aftermath” will be released with Arnold Schwarzenegger about the Russian Vitaly Kaloyev, whose family died in a plane crash over Lake Constance in 2002. 478 days after the tragedy, Vitaly Kaloev killed an air traffic controller, because of whose mistake his wife and two children died.

In July 2002, Russian architect Vitaly Kaloev worked in Spain. He completed the construction of a cottage near Barcelona, handed over the object to the customer and waited for his family, whom he had not seen for nine months. Svetlana and her children, 11-year-old son Konstantin and 4-year-old daughter Diana, could not buy a plane ticket. And only three hours before departure at the airport she was offered last-minute tickets on board that same plane.

At this point, the Tu-154 pilots had not yet seen the Boeing approaching from the left, but were prepared for the fact that they would have to perform a maneuver to diverge from it. Therefore, they began to descend immediately after receiving the dispatcher's command (in fact, even before it was completed). However, immediately after this, a command from the automatic proximity warning system (TCAS) sounded in the cockpit, informing about the need to gain altitude. At the same time, the pilots of flight 611 received instructions from the same system to descend.

One of the crew members drew the attention of the others to the TCAS command, and he was told that the controller had given the command to descend. Because of this, no one confirmed receipt of the command (although the plane was already descending). A few seconds later, Nielsen repeated the command, this time its receipt was immediately confirmed. At the same time, he mistakenly reported incorrect information about another aircraft, saying that it was to the right of the Tu-154. As subsequent flight recorder transcripts revealed, some of the pilots of Flight 2937 were misled by this message and may have believed that there was another aircraft not visible on the TCAS screen. The Tu-154 continued to descend following instructions from the controller rather than TCAS. None of the pilots informed the dispatcher about the contradiction in the received commands.

At the same time, Flight 611 was descending in compliance with TCAS instructions. As soon as possible, the pilots reported this to Nielsen. The controller did not hear this message due to the fact that another aircraft simultaneously contacted him on a different frequency.

In the last seconds, the pilots of both planes saw each other and tried to prevent a collision by completely deflecting the controls, but this did not help.

The police did not want to let Vitaly into the crash site, but when he explained that his wife and children were there, they let him in. According to Vitaly, his daughter Diana was found three kilometers from the plane crash site. Kaloev himself participated in the search work and first found Diana’s torn beads, and then her body.

At ten in the morning I was at the scene of the tragedy. I saw all these bodies - I froze in tetanus and could not move. A village near Uberlingen, the school had its headquarters there. And nearby, at an intersection, as it turned out later, my son fell. I still can’t forgive myself for driving nearby and not feeling anything, not recognizing him.

On February 22, 2004, his attempt to talk to air traffic controller Peter Nielsen ended in the murder of the air traffic controller on the threshold of his own home in the Swiss town of Kloten: twelve blows with a pocketknife.

I knocked. Nielsen left. I first motioned for him to invite me into the house. But he slammed the door. I called again and told him: Ich bin Russland. I remember these words from school. He said nothing. I took out photographs that showed the bodies of my children. I wanted him to look at them. But he pushed my hand away and sharply gestured for me to get out... Like a dog: get out. Well, I said nothing, I was offended. Even my eyes filled with tears. I extended my hand to him with the photographs a second time and said in Spanish: “Look!” He slapped me on the hand and the pictures flew off. And away we go.

Kaloyev was released early - in November 2008. When leaving prison, the first thing Vitaly Kaloev said was: “Why do I need this freedom now?”

Radio Liberty

Vitaly Kaloev recently celebrated his sixtieth birthday and retired. For eight years he worked as Deputy Minister of Construction of North Ossetia. He was appointed to this post shortly after his early release from a Swiss prison. Thirteen years after the tragedy, Vitaly Kaloev got married.

I think that I lived my life in vain: I could not save my family. What depended on me is the second question,” admitted Vitaly Kaloev. - You can’t learn to live after this... I still haven’t recovered. But there is no need to give up. If you need to cry, cry, but it’s better to do it alone: no one saw me with tears, I didn’t show them anywhere. Maybe, maybe on the very first day. We must live with the destiny that is destined for us. Live and help people.

Trailer for the film “Consequences”

  • Immediately after the disaster, the Swiss company Skyguide placed all the blame on the Russian pilots, who, in its opinion, poorly understood the dispatcher’s instructions in English. In May 2004, the German Federal Office for Aircraft Accident Investigation published a conclusion on the results of its investigation into the crash. Experts admitted that the dispatchers were to blame for the collision. Only after the publication of the report did Skyguide admit its mistakes, and two years after the disaster, its director Alain Rossier apologized to the families of the victims.
  • In 2016, Vitaly Kaloev was detained at Munich airport. He was flying to participate in mourning events on the occasion of the death of a Tu-154 aircraft over Lake Constance on July 2, 2002. It turned out that the Swiss side protested against allowing Kaloyev to attend the ceremony.

  • According to Kaloev, the creators of the film “Consequences” did not consult with him, he himself has not seen the film, but plans to watch it. “They took it off and took it off. What is there to react? The main thing is that nothing is distorted. Otherwise there will be action with a chase. I wasn't hiding from anyone. He came openly and left openly,” Kaloev said.

Roman Melnik is a hardworking 60-year-old man, he works as a construction foreman and enjoys well-deserved respect. On Christmas Eve, his colleague Matt tells Roman to go home early because work is ahead of schedule. Roman's wife and daughter arrive to see him in the evening. Matt knows that Roman will soon become a grandfather, he invites him not to go to work tomorrow, but to spend the holiday with his family. Roman goes home, takes a shower, and changes clothes. Before leaving for the airport, he looks at the ultrasound of his future grandson and smiles. At the airport, Roman sees on the board that flight AX-112 is delayed. Melnik approaches the information desk, asks about the plane's arrival time, and says that he is meeting his relatives. The airport employee asks Roman to follow her and leaves the man in a separate room. After some time, another woman, who introduces herself as Eva Sanders, asks her to listen carefully. An accident occurred, two planes collided in the air, there is no official information about the casualties yet, but in such disasters, as a rule, no one is left alive. Roman is shocked. From the next room you can hear the anguished screams of other people, who were also informed about the tragedy. Roman faints. He is receiving medical care. Eva asks if Roman has any other relatives who should be informed about the deaths of Olina and Nadezhda, but he answers in the negative. Eva strongly recommends that Roman contact the Support Center, which was created for those who lost loved ones in a plane crash. But he is left alone with his grief.

Jacob Bonaos and his wife Christina have sex. Then they go into their son's bedroom, Samuel is fast asleep in his arms with a teddy bear. Jake talks about his teddy bear, without which he could not sleep as a child. After this, Jake goes to work. He's an air traffic controller. His colleague goes on a break. Technicians come to the control room and carry out maintenance on telephone lines. The pilot of Flight AX-112 requests permission to descend to an altitude of 10 thousand feet, Jake says that he should wait for confirmation. His boss comes and talks about an unscheduled flight EF-135, the route was changed due to bad weather, he needs to call Pittsburgh. Jacob takes off his headphones and tries to call Pittsburgh, but to no avail. Then he puts on his headphones again and gives permission for Flight 112 to descend. During his second attempt to call, Jacob fails to notice that another plane, flight DH-661, has appeared on the terminal screen. Jacob is forced to give orders on two different lines at the same time. By tragic accident, flights AX-112 and DH-661 descend to an altitude of 6 thousand feet at the same time, their courses intersecting. When the markers of both planes suddenly disappear from the monitor, Jacob realizes in horror what has happened.

Jake goes to the conference room. The boss (Robert) confirms his worst fears: two planes collided, no survivors. Jake bursts into sobs. He asks about the number of dead. Robert says that it is not yet clear why the tragedy occurred, Jake is not blamed for this, but an investigation will be carried out. The next day, Jacob is asked to list all the actions he took, minute by minute, including the fact that he was literally without headphones for a moment and did not hear the pilot of Flight DH-661 warning that the plane was descending. Jacob is escorted to his car by a lawyer, who advises him not to talk to anyone or leave his home.

Roman watches the news; 271 people died in the plane crash. Eve Sanders calls him again and suggests that he seek help from the Support Center. Instead, Roman goes to the site of the tragedy, he hides the fact that his relatives were among the dead, and together with other volunteers works on the cleanup. He finds his daughter's pearl necklace on a tree branch, calls her by name, and then discovers Nadia's body. Roman sobs, squeezing him in his arms. Heartbroken, he sits for a long time next to the bags containing his dead wife and daughter.

After a news release reported on the details of the tragedy, the walls of the house where Jacob Bonaos lives are full of “murderer” inscriptions. Christina finds her husband in bed, he is depressed.

Roman spends time at the cemetery, he stays for a long time near the graves of his wife, daughter and unborn grandson. The watchman asks Roman not to stay in the cemetery at night anymore.

Jacob suffers from insomnia, he constantly watches the news, where they discuss the extent of his guilt. Relations with Christina become strained, the spouses quarrel.

Roman constantly reviews the video recording of his wife and daughter. Journalist Tessa Corbett comes to him, Roman does not want to open the door for her. Tessa plans to write a book about the disaster; she doesn't want to bother him, but she would like to ask Roman a few questions. The journalist leaves clippings with her articles under the door and promises to come back later. Then Matt comes to check on Roman. Roman says that he needs to put things in order, after which he may return to work.

Christina tells Jake that she and Samuel will be staying with her sister for a while. While their marriage has not yet been completely destroyed, it is better for them to live apart. Jacob agrees with this only for the sake of his son, the house has become unsafe. Jake goes to a gun store where he buys a pistol. At the airport, a suspended air traffic controller meets with his former boss and lawyer. Robert once again suggests that Jake see a psychiatrist. Now there are two options for Bonaos: move to administrative work or quit and receive a good severance pay. Robert strongly recommends choosing the second option, or even better, moving to another city and changing your name.

Roman meets with a lawyer who represents the interests of the airline. Melnik is the only one who decided to sue the airline. The lawyer offers him a deal: he withdraws his claim and receives compensation of 160 thousand dollars for the death of his family. In response, Roman shows a photo of his wife and daughter; he wants at least someone to apologize to him. The lawyer remains indifferent, he says that if Roman does not agree to sign the proposed document, he will not receive a dime. Roman shouts: look at this! The lawyer reluctantly glances at the photo. Roman leaves.

Jacob visits a psychiatrist, he demands to write him another prescription for medicine. The doctor tries to convince the patient to stop using strong drugs, but he claims that he does not want to talk about his problems, it is easier for him to forget. At home, Jake drinks a whole handful of pills and falls to the floor. At the last moment, he decides not to take his own life and induces vomiting.

Roman hung newspaper clippings on the wall, which included a discussion about the fault of the air traffic controller in the plane crash. He buys alcohol and goes to the construction site where he used to work. Roman is standing on the roof, having thoughts of suicide.

One year later. A memorial service for the victims is being held at the crash site. There is a memorial in the form of steel balls installed here. The design of the monument was inspired by a newspaper publication with a story about Roman finding his dead daughter’s necklace. The miller talks to another man who also lost his loved ones. Dealing with grief takes a long time.

Jacob changed his place of residence and name. He works at a travel agency and lives alone in an apartment away from his wife and son. Roman meets with Tessa, he asks to help him find Jacob Banaos. Since the airline did not apologize to him, he wants to look into the eyes of the one who is responsible for the death of his relatives. Tessa receives information about Jacob's new name and place of residence. The journalist turns to him with a request to give his comments for the book, which she has already completed. Jake is reluctant to express his opinion, but says that he often imagines himself in the shoes of those who have lost their loved ones, while thinking about his own wife and son. Tessa meets with Roman again; after some hesitation, she finally gives him Jake's address.

Christina and Samuel come to Jake for the weekend. Jake misses his family very much, he asks his wife to start over. Christina believes that it will take some time to restore the relationship. In the morning someone rings the doorbell. Christina opens the door, but there is no one there anymore. Roman found Jacob, but this time he couldn’t find the strength to meet him. He spends time in his hotel room, reminiscing about his lost family. Late in the evening he comes to Jacob's apartment again, he opens the door for him. Roman shows him a photograph and asks him to apologize for killing his loved ones. Jacob pushes the intruder away, shouting that he didn't kill anyone, it was an accident. He threatens to call the police. Roman drops the photo and Jacob's hysteria drives him crazy. Enraged, Roman stabs Jake several times in the chest and neck. Jacob is bleeding. Roman goes inside. He calls Christina and Samuel, who recoil in horror, by the names of his late wife and daughter, and it seems to him that this is his family. All three of them are sobbing while sitting on the sofa. Jacob passed away.

Roman is serving a prison sentence for murder. After serving ten years, he is released from prison on parole. He will have to visit a psychiatrist for four months; if the medical reports are normal, he will be able to remain free. Roman goes to the cemetery. He leaves his daughter's necklace on the monument. A young man approaches him, allegedly looking for a way out. Roman offers to accompany him, he asks the guy which of his relatives is buried here. He replies that his father is buried elsewhere. Roman realizes that in front of him is Jacob’s grown-up son. Samuel takes out a gun, he intends to shoot his father's killer. Roman is not opposed to this; he understands Samuel’s feelings. Roman says he regrets what he did. Samuel changed his mind, he will not kill Roman, he was raised differently. Roman leaves the cemetery alive.

Everything was like that. On July 1, 2002, a Tu-154M plane flying from Moscow to Barcelona collided in the air with another plane, a Boeing 757-200PF cargo plane flying from Bergamo to Brussels). No one survived. There were two pilots on the Boeing. There were 60 passengers flying on the Tu-154M, most of whom were children - they went to Spain on vacation. The collision took place near Lake Constance.

There were several reasons for the disaster: improper operation of the equipment, incorrect assessment of the situation by the air traffic controller, loss of communication with the dispatcher - a whole series of circumstances that ultimately led to the death of people. The relatives of the victims were paid compensation, and the disaster began to be forgotten. But a year and a half later they remembered her again. Air traffic controller Peter Nielsen was killed on his doorstep in front of his wife and children, stabbed several times. The killer turned out to be a Russian citizen, Ossetian architect Vitaly Kaloev. In 2002, he had already been working in Spain for a long time and was expecting his wife and two children to visit. They managed to board the Tu-154M at the last moment; there were empty seats there by chance.

Film “The Constance Trap. Death over the lake"

When Kaloev learned about the disaster, he immediately went to the place where the debris fell. He was allowed to participate in the search work, and he managed to find first his daughter’s beads, and then her body. As he told the investigation, he came to Nielsen with only one purpose: to show a photograph of the dead and ask the dispatcher to apologize for his mistake. Nielsen angrily knocked the photo out of Kaloyev’s hands, and Kaloyev no longer remembers what happened next.
After two years in prison (the sentence was eight years), Vitaly Kaloev was released early. He returned to Russia, where he was appointed Deputy Minister of Architecture and Construction Policy of North Ossetia, worked until 2016 and retired. Awarded the medal “For the Glory of Ossetia”.

TV program “Live” about Vitaly Kaloev

The film took the events of 2002-2004. as a basis, but a lot, of course, has been changed. So, the scene of the disaster, as well as the entire action of the film, was moved to the USA. Vitaly Kaloev “turned” into Roman Melnik (), who lives and works in America. His wife is flying to him with her daughter, although she is pregnant, so the monument on the grave will also be for the three dead. And the Miller finds his daughter’s beads, and the daughter herself. And he also finds no place in searching for the culprit of the disaster, amazed at how company representatives offer him compensation instead of simply sincerely expressing condolences and asking for forgiveness. And he goes to the dispatcher with a knife, although the dispatcher here is not a Dane, but an ordinary American, Jake Bonanos, and he has not three children, but one little son. Melnik spends much more time in prison. These are not just cosmetic changes, but important details for the development of the plot that the authors intended. A plot that in reality was completely different precisely because the variables in this formula are different.

Trailer for the film “Consequences”

In general, the most important thing in this film, the plot and ending of which are known in advance, is its tone. Like the best classical tragedies, it is resolved as a story about fate that leads two people to each other, although they themselves do not know it. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a “simple guy”, taciturn, handy, simple-minded. An elderly man who was happy because he was about to become a grandfather, and suddenly he was left completely alone, without loved ones, without a goal. Orphaned. And anger slowly began to boil within him.

But perhaps more important is the figure of Jake Bonanos, the dispatcher, played by a dramatic actor in this film. His Jake is the victim. They tell him that he is not to blame for what happened, but in all the eyes turned to him he reads the accusation. He himself is sure that so many people died because of him, so he does not wash off the inscription “murderer” that one of his neighbors painted on the facade of his house. McNairy leads his hero through all stages of despair, including a suicide attempt, but we know that he is destined to die in a different way. Not when he is ready to die, but when he suddenly has hope that he can still live. When he climbs out of the abyss of despondency and starts a new life, fate will overtake him in the person of the Miller, but this, oddly enough, will not be the end of the story.

English-language trailer for the film “Consequences”

The tragedy over Lake Constance much earlier inspired the largest Russian screenwriter to create his own story, which he himself decided to stage as his directorial debut. The film was released in 2007, and it was a genuine psychological (even to some extent psychedelic) thriller, but the familiar details were immediately recognizable. Of course, Mindadze was not talking about Kaloev, but about something deep, important that sits inside each of us, so perhaps the film is perceived not so much by the mind as by the subconscious. Many heroes do not have names, they are simply carried by the whirlwind of history, thrown from side to side, and they rush without asking questions and without choosing a specific goal. Something needs to be done - they do it: several people are traveling in one car, and each of them had someone in the crashed plane, everyone here is in a constant state of passion, and anything is possible.

The dispatcher here will be strangled, not stabbed, and no one will get anything for it. Even the identity of the killer will be in question - does it matter who was able to get to the person who is not guilty, because the partner went to bed and the equipment did not work. There is no Lake Constance here, this is all the southern Russian outback, and the plane was flying to a more prosaic Egypt, the heroes are all Russian, but Mindadze conveyed the horror of what was happening, its uncontrollability, its naturalness and unnaturalness at the same time, scrupulously and deeply.

Now work is underway on a new film about Vitaly Kaloev and the plane crash, and this time, apparently, the names of the characters will correspond to the real participants in the events: the second title of the film “Unforgiven” is “Kaloev”. Vitaly Kaloev read and approved the script written by Andreasyan, and his role in the film was approved. The actor will deliberately grow a beard and lose weight to create the image. Also in the film, as the authors say, they will play, and. In the script of the film, special attention is paid to the depiction of Kaloev’s family life before the tragedy, and these images make his condition clear both immediately after the disaster and at the time of the meeting with the dispatcher. Events are shown from Kaloev’s point of view, and if he doesn’t see something, we don’t see it either.

The exact release date of the film has not yet been announced; it received government support for production, and distribution was planned for the fall of 2017.
