Interestingly, the State Museum was originally located in The Hague. It owes its appearance to Louis Bonaparte, the brother of Napoleon I. In 1800, Louis ordered the creation of an exhibition, and already in 1808 the unique exhibition was moved to Amsterdam, where it occupied the space of the Royal Palace. Until 1885, precious masterpieces from the vaults were repeatedly transported between the palaces of the city, until they finally found a permanent refuge in a room built specifically for the Rijksmuseum.

The structure was erected by the architect Peter Kuipers, who won with his project in a competition organized by the General Directorate of Arts and Sciences. This huge house resembles a giant eight in shape, crowned with eight towers. The "empty" space between the walls of the two wings is given over to small courtyards hidden under a roof of glass structures. They contain an auditorium, a kitchen and storage blocks.

In total, the building has three tiers, including an underground floor. At the same time, the first above-ground level is divided into two parts - western and eastern, between which there is a central passage. In general, combining features of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, the building corresponds to the Neo-Gothic style. According to Kuijpers, this direction in the art of construction as a whole should correspond to the culture of the Netherlands and the history of the country.

The Rijksmuseum has been reconstructed several times, as a result of which it has lost some of its original design features. The last major renovation works of the State Museum house were carried out in 2003-2013. Then 375 million euros were spent on the restoration procedure.

Of course, the building itself is not as valuable as the exhibits stored in it. For example, Rembrandt's Night Watch, Vermeer's Milkmaid, Peter de Hooch's Mansion and many other paintings are exhibited here, the cost of which is invaluable for the entire world community. In addition, the Rijksmuseum exhibits collections of sculptures, furniture, precious stones, as well as ship models, weapons, flags ...

By the way, a huge part of the collection, more than 200 thousand exhibits, can be seen in digital form on the museum's website. The Rijksmuseum is one of the repositories dedicated to making art objects truly accessible to the public.

In the park in front of the museum, there is an inscription "I Amsterdam" so beloved by tourists, near which, day and night, many people who want to take a "selfie" or a photo for memory.

The Rijksmuseum (Rijksmuseum) in Amsterdam has been in existence for over two hundred years and is today one of the most interesting museums in the world. The very first exposition of the museum was opened to the public in 1800 (at that time the museum was named Nationale Kunstgallerij - National Art Gallery). Since then, he moved several times before, in 1808, in Amsterdam, by order of the King of the Netherlands, Louis Bonaparte, Napoleon's brother, his own museum building was built, at that time called the Royal Museum. It received its modern name later, in 1815 by a special decree of King William I. In 1885, the State Museum moved to a beautiful building, built by the Dutch architect Petrus Cuypers JH, in the neo-Renaissance style fashionable at that time.

The museum's unique collection, accumulated over the centuries, contains many masterpieces of Dutch and world art. Here you can see the magnificent "Night Watch" by Rembrandt, several paintings by Vermeer, Van Dyck and Jan Steen. The museum has a rare collection of Asian art, an extensive collection of prints, drawings and classical photography.

The main building of the museum is currently under reconstruction, which will be completed in spring 2013. All the most important paintings from the museum's collection can be seen on the exhibition opened in the wing of the museum, renovated in 1996, located at the corner of Jan Luijkenstraat and Hobbemastraat.

Photo and video filming within the walls of the museum is prohibited. Tickets can be purchased in advance, even several months in advance, through the museum's official website.

A small exhibition of paintings from the Rijksmuseum collection works in the terminal of Schiphol Airport, in Amsterdam. You can visit it after passing through passport control. Free admission.

National Museum of the Netherlands - Rijksmuseum

In the famous Dutch Rijksmuseum, in one room next door, there are works by Korel and portraits by his student Martin Van Heemskerk. The portrait depicts a wealthy merchant from Amsterdam, Peter Bikker, along with his 26-year-old wife, Anna Codde.

This is one of the most beautiful portraits ever painted in Holland. A young woman, dressed in the fashion of those years, is depicted near a spinning wheel and with her delicate fingers slightly holds the thinnest white thread. In the first third of the 16th century, such a spinning wheel, equipped with a wheel drive, was the latest invention and was very rare and only in the homes of wealthy townspeople who occupy a rather high social position. The record goes on to say that the portrait was made in 1529, when Dirk Jacobs and Cornelis Tenissen were creating the famous group portraits of the members of the rifle guild. It is worth noting that these portraits were very characteristic at the time.

A strong cultural link existed between the northern and southern provinces in the 16th century. This is evidenced by the work of Peter Artsen, who was born in Amsterdam. Still, as a young boy, he moved the large city of Flanders - Antwerp, it was there that he became widely known as the founder of the genre of genre in Europe. Later he returned to his homeland and continued to work in a realistic direction. The Rijksmuseum contains a fragment of the painting "Adoration of the Shepherds". The museum exhibits several more paintings by Artsen, incl. "Dance among the eggs". This is a typical everyday scene from rural life. In the village tavern in front of the burning hearth, a thin boy began to dance. Eggshells, oyster shells, and wilted wildflowers are scattered around. Another merry fellow holds a glass of wine in one hand, and put the other on the shoulder of a young maid. By his appearance, one can understand that he is loudly singing a daring song. The canvas was written to glorify the joy of peasant life, but the modest atmosphere surrounding the inn's visitors, the constraint in their movements, does not give us the opportunity to feel this. There is some tension in this gaiety. Only a girl, probably written off from nature, demonstrates her spontaneity and naturalness.

Artsen's works were an innovation: in European countries no one had yet tried to paint a picture on the theme of peasant life and the poor strata of society, but after a short time he had followers. One of them, his student Joachim Beikelaer (1543 - 1573) from Antwerp. The Rijksmuseum has a large canvas of his work called "Kitchen". In a small room there is a scene from the Gospel. But the main theme is a huge still life that filled almost the entire canvas. Sausages, chickens and turkeys are hung over the table. A couple of beautiful slender maids, perhaps painted from the same model, resemble Artsen's heroines.

Thus, in the Dutch art of the 16th century, new genres related to the depiction of various aspects of life arose: everyday scene, still life, landscape. In the 17th century, they reached the peak of their heyday. And at this time, art is divided into two parts. The different historical development of the two parts of the Netherlands during this period led to the formation of two different art schools.

In the 17th century, Hendrik Averkamp's work was popular, specializing in finely written small-sized drawings of a winter landscape with small human figures. There are peasants and fashionable women. Someone perfectly holds on to the bluish sparkling ice, and someone fell. The beauty of winter nature appears before the audience in all its glory. The canvas combines genre and landscape.

A small picture of Esaias Van de Velde "Society in the Park" evokes the same feelings. This is an ordinary life devoid of any bright events. Joyful, fashionably dressed youth arranged a feast in the middle of a beautiful park. Velde pays great attention to the reproduction of dishes, greenery of shrubs, everything that makes life more beautiful. Velde worked in Harlem with the largest Dutch artist of the era, Frans Hals.

For painting of the 17th century. a kind of realism is characteristic. Painters strive to poeticize the world around them. They depict certain objects while achieving virtuosity. Some paint the sea, others the expanses of fields, others, household utensils, buildings, or rural gatherings.

The craftsmen tried to comprehend the peculiar charm of everyday objects. People who have an idea of the history of Dutch painting will recognize the paintings by visiting the museum.

Basically, they painted the sea and ships, which is quite natural for a coastal state, in the life of which fishing and travel play an important role. At the beginning of the XVII century. the small state of the Netherlands was a powerful power, and its prosperity was largely based on trade with distant countries.

The founder of marineism was Hendrik Wrom. His large canvas in the Rijksmuseum depicts the dispatch of a naval squadron to the East Indies in 1598. In the center of the picture is the "portrait" of the flagship of the squadron of the ship "Mauritius", which is executed with great precision. Perhaps, Vrom achieved this accuracy, since in his youth he was a sailor, and then took numerous orders from sailors and shipowners. Dutch artists did not limit themselves to exact copying. Reliability is always highly valued, but the tasks of painting are somewhat different. This is not a photograph: the artist brings into his work his understanding of the beauty of nature, his love for mountains and fields, the brackish sea breeze, for the constantly changing position of the clouds in the sky.

Van Goyen is known for his small painting View of Dordrecht. A cathedral with a tower under construction and the wings of dozens of windmills rises above one of the ancient towns. The city itself seems to be shifted into the air shrouded in a misty haze. This magic of evening lighting on the water surface is simply mesmerizing. Guyenne lowers the horizon, and the firmament occupies about eighty percent of the painting's area, which makes it appear infinitely high. The mobility of the clouds is incomparably conveyed on the canvas. The air that seems to envelop all the depicted objects is the most remarkable achievement of the Dutch landscape painters.

Images of animals occupy a special place in the painting of this period. Animal painters appear who painted landscapes superbly. The most talented of them, who passed away at the age of 29, is Paul Potter. The museum presents his small-sized painting "Horses in the Pasture", which evokes an idea of the endless expanses of fields. In a slender stallion, Potter saw the perfection of nature.

Jan Asselein created a large painting "The Swan in Danger". The snow-white swan, protecting its nest and offspring, arched its beautiful neck and beats its wings with such force that feathers fly around it. The head of a swimming dog is visible next to it. A few years later, the owner of the painting ordered to write an explanation on the plate at the bottom of the painting. Many have assumed that the swan personified Jan de Witt, who practically stood at the head of state. So, a scene from the life of birds turned into a topical political allegory. The Swan in Danger is the first painting acquired in 1800 for the National Gallery of Art.

The Rijksmuseum houses a large collection of paintings by the great Rembrandt. At the end of the XIX century. here were such major works of his as "Night Watch", "Jewish Bride" and others. But the total number of his works was small. At the end of the last century, this collection was supplemented and expanded. Several canvases were purchased or received as a gift. Some of the canvases were donated to the museum for display. For example, "Blind Tobit and Anna with a kid." Nearby are the works of Rembrandt's students.

In Amsterdam, not far from the "Rembrandt House" there is a magnificent mansion of the rich man Jan Sixx. The descendants of Jan Six are very careful about the famous portrait of their ancestor, painted by Rembrandt in 1654. A black felt hat goes well with a reddish hair, and a dark camisole with a bright blue raincoat. The extraordinary breadth of the brushstroke in those days seemed strange, and the work was unfinished. Six probably had a broad view of art to appreciate the perfection of this pictorial sketch.

In the picture, Sixx prepares to leave the house, he has already put on a raincoat. But all his actions take place automatically, as a calm face expresses thoughtfulness and a certain detachment. On this canvas, you can see a huge range of various painting techniques that Rembrandt talentedly uses.

Video about the Rijksmuseum:

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, in terms of the value of its collections, is rightfully equated to the Louvre in Paris or the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

The collection that laid the foundation for the Rijksmuseum was located in The Hague until 1800 and was represented by art collected by the Stathowders, the governors of the Habsburgs. In 1808, Louis Bonaparte, Napoleon's brother, transported it to Amsterdam and placed it in the palace, adding valuable exhibits that belonged to the royal dynasty.
In 1863, the question of the construction of a separate museum building was raised. Only in 1876, out of the many works submitted for the competition, the commission chose the author of the project - Petrus Kuipers became him. In an effort to create a new national style in architecture, he mixes neo - gothic and neo - renaissance, adds a few touches and the result is still admired.
But for contemporaries, the project turned out to be quite daring. At the end of the 19th century, puritanical customs reigned in the Netherlands, and the reigning William III reacted coolly to him.
The museum was regularly rebuilt, completed, and its collection is still being replenished.
From 2003 to 2013, restoration work was carried out in the building. The museum has changed, it has become more modern and interesting for visitors.

Rijksmuseum (Netherlands. Rijksmuseum, State Museum) is the largest in the Netherlands, the most visited and richest - the masterpieces of the best masters of world painting are literally hundreds here. It is located in the Museum Square (Netherlands. Museumplein).

The State Museum owes its creation to King Louis Bonaparte. In 1808, he moved the Hague National Gallery of Art to Amsterdam, creating a museum at the Royal Palace. In 1817, the collection moved to Trippenhuis, which now houses the Royal Academy of Sciences. Bonaparte actively bought up famous paintings and works of art, so soon the question arose about the construction of a separate building. In 1876, a competition was held for the best design, the winner of which was the architect Petrus Cuypers. In 1885, a new museum was opened in the neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance styles. Ten years later, another wing was added to the building. The museum was rebuilt throughout the 20th century, but most of the work was carried out inside the building.
